Our first e-newsletter of 2016 includes news from Epson that suggests that we are still a long way from achieving the much-vaunted 'paperless workplace'. And despite the fact that this research comes from a printer company, there is no need to be overly cynical about its findings. We would certainly all agree that, despite the best efforts of the industry for many years, there is still much to be done in terms of convincing 'the world at large' of the benefits of going paper free - or at least, paper lite. Epson's Rob Clark says: "People collaborate effectively for many tasks digitally; for many others, a printed page is key, or an interactive whiteboard, an augmented reality headset or an in-person huddle. Businesses need to provide their employees with the options to use the best technology and processes for each task in each circumstance, from the humble printed page to the more sophisticated digital collaboration tools."

AIIM's John Mancini has a slightly different take, as an article in our Jan/Feb printed edition explains: "We are never going to eliminate paper completely, but when it becomes clear that going paper-free delivers return on investment and can improve overall productivity, businesses will be more willing to invest in the technologies that allow them to go paper-free." And this, surely, is key. When we are able to demonstrate ROI of under 18 months - and frequently far quicker, as little as six months in more and more cases - then we will start to see a concerted move away from paper processes.
