Welcome to the May 2015 Newsletter.

We’re all well aware of the cyber threats that originate from outside our IT perimeters but now the focus is increasingly turning to the insider threat which, though rarely malicious, has nonetheless played a significant part in security breaches and incidents. In fact the 'IBM Security Services 2014 Cyber Security Intelligence Index' report found that over 95% of all security incidents investigated involved human error as a contributing factor.

The unsettling news doesn’t end there though! The dangers of the insider threat are being exacerbated by the growing IT security skills shortage. As Chris Sullivan of Courion explains in his article this month, “This skills shortage prevents European economies from capitalising on the opportunities that the digital economy offers, as well as creating security challenges that organisations need to address if they are to benefit from the digital age.”

Getting to grips with mobile security will play a big part in combatting the insider threat, an issue brought into sharp focus with the rise of BYOD in the workplace. As Phoenix highlight in this month’s news, around 60% of workers who bring their own devices to work are failing to get IT support to help set their devices up. Luckily Yad Jaura of Globo plc has some advice this month on how to mitigate the mobile security challenge, explaining that it is only in doing so that we can truly begin to reap the benefits of a mobile enterprise: “Many believe that improving the way mobile and field-based staff work holds the most potential for overall business improvement since IT first revolutionised things more than 40 years ago.” So it’s not all security doom and gloom this month then!
