Job Done?
After a flurry of announcements and responses last May about the winding down of the BIM Task Group, it all went quiet. We are now in the middle of the proposed deadline (tautology?), and await with bated breath the identity and shape of the new 'legacy group' that will take over the task of keeping Level 2 on track, following the completion of the BIM Task Group's mission in March, in a 'managed handover', with Government funding apparently remaining in place until March 2016. Future funding and Government support for Level 3 is in place remains in place and plans exist for Level 4 – the next task for the BIM Task Group under Mark Bew?
The legacy group will take over Level 2, the BIM hubs and the continued development of the documentation and updating of the existing documents where necessary. BS1192:2007 and PAS1192:2 and :3 will be developed and is being developed as ISO 19650 for the international market place. The Learning Outcomes Framework is just being signed off so that training and certification against a single specification can be producedcourtesy of BRE.
We should know shortly who will be taking over. Some may feel that it represents a diminution of the government's interest in BIM. I think that it represents a natural progression as adoption throughout the industry becomes an accepted fact. As the BIM Task Group probably found out through countless presentations there are only so many fresh ways you can tell a story. The message has been accepted – time to pass on the responsibility to the industry.
