Digital Process Plant
How do you scale an experiment up from a benchtop full of test tubes, Bunsen burners, bell jars and whatever else it took to prove it worked, and devise a working plant to churn out the fruits of your endeavours on an industrial scale? It takes more than a bucketful of charm and enthusiasm backed up by a folder of 2D drawings and schematics to encourage cynical investors to part with their cash. And you are going to need quite lot of that, because setting up a manufacturing plant can't be done piecemeal - it has to be complete and trouble free from day one!
That's why the article in this newsletter about UK based company, Enval, is so interesting. It explains the processes the company went through to establish their unique and environmentally critical product, and the software tools they used to put up a case for potential investors. Using tools like Autodesk Inventor, Factory Design Suite, P&ID, Navisworks and others they were able to share designs with them, giving them an overall view of the plant – which was, as they say, 'digital prototyping at its best'.
An interesting addendum: Where the investors swayed more by the potential profitability of the plant, or by its potential to massively reduce the amount of plastic waste going into landfills?
