The hidden menace of data silos

Data sharing is crucial, but it has become a problem in many organisations that are duplicating tasks at an ever-expanding rate because no one takes ownership of a document. Bob Dunn of Hyland explains how professionals responsible for the management of content and knowledge can break down departmental silos and drive productivity by taking a different cultural approach

Comment

Welcome to our February eNewsletter which includes a thought-provoking opinion piece from ITESOFT’s John Stovold on the subject of paper. You may think that over 27 years of publication, Document Manager might have said all there was to say on the topic of paper, but you’d be wrong. John’s article looks in unsettling detail at the many and varied impacts on the environment of our reliance on paper, and it makes for at times very worrying reading.

The paper industry is the 5th largest consumer of energy in the world, using vast resources in fuel to cut down trees, transport lumber and then manufacture paper. A single page of A4 paper requires approximately 10 litres of water to manufacture. According to Stovold, a typical organisation is responsible for the mulching of around 30 trees every year - just in its invoice handling. If this isn’t enough to make you seriously consider automating your Accounts Payable processes, maybe nothing will be!
