Welcome to the first Storage Magazine eNewsletter of the new year, where we're all very much hoping for something of a fresh start! This issue includes an interesting and educational article from Q Associates' Gareth John in which he urges caution in the rush to cloud adoption.

Many organisations, he says, adopted an aggressive cloud-first strategy only to later discern the resultant increasing costs, and are now trying to 'reverse out' of the public cloud - and incurring yet more expense. Just as there are many potential benefits of public cloud, there are also many valid concerns including connectivity, security, data sovereignty, lock-in, and of course cost.

"Organisations need to carefully assess their existing IT estate to ascertain which workloads are appropriate for cloud transition," says Gareth in his article. "There will almost certainly be workloads that are unsuitable for the transition and the ones that are appropriate will suit different cloud models. In this light, most customers that I talk to are looking to adopt a hybrid multi-cloud model."

The environment is shifting rapidly, and organisations may be torn between rushing into a move that they later regret and being left behind by competitors - but it is a decision that almost every organisation will have to face.
