On-site Security
We had a successful Hammers Awards this year – a record attendance and some worthy winners – in spite of the uncertainties surrounding the industry. With uncertainties come opportunities, though, for those willing to find them. Another issue raised its head this year, though, raised by Bill Hill of Lighthouse CIC, a charity that works specifically for the construction industry, and who, alongside Crash we have been delighted to have as guests for the Hammers. Speaking about the work that his charity gets involved in, he included the appalling on-site safety record we have within the industry – where we consistently top the league tables for injuries and other safety lapses.
The issue was raised elsewhere through the evening, but when the awards where handed out, I had the honour to give the Editors Choice award to Human Recognition Systems, developers of software that handle safety issues on site – and like similar companies, too often the Cinderella at these ceremonies. It’s not just stopping people walking into the path of construction vehicles, either, as safety involves security, access, efficiency and all of the other aspects that govern employees – who should be allowed on site, are they fully trained, are their qualifications up to date, and are they aware of the most recent regulations governing their trade – as important for their role in the project as keeping up with the latest technology?
