Comment

The Lobster Quadrille,

The events of the last four months have thoroughly altered the social attitudes of the country. Taking the dog for a walk at 6.30am next to the beach – usually deserted – half a dozen of us came together, properly distanced, and stood to chat. When one of us moved slightly, the whole group subconsciously shifted position minutely to retain the correct distances. Having realized the toxicity of close personal contact we are adjusting to the new realities. It was an unconscious dance that mirrored the courtly minuets of the Middle Ages – and, of course, Lewis Carroll's song in 'Alice's Adventures.. etc...'

People's ability to adapt is going to be tested, but the experience of one architectural HLM Architects practice shows that WFH, Working from Home, is going to become standard practice for many companies. I would go further and state that companies that have spent the last 10 years adopting BIM working practices with its focus on collaboration and data sharing between disparate offices and technologies and where architects spend more time communicating with project partners in other countries than they do with the guy at the next desk, have a head start on the rest of us.

Of course, there are those who can't adapt - probably the same people who take no precautions against Covid19, but Darwin's law will deal with those in due course – although Darwin's Awards have been put on hold because of the sheer volume of nominations.

WFH implies less crowded buses and trains, but more reliance on cars and bikes when you have to travel, accompanied by the merry calls of professional drivers to rusty drivers and cyclists - 'B****r off to Barnard Castle, Mate!' meaning 'I think you need your eyes testing, sir!'.

'Will you, won't you, will you, won't you, will you join the dance?'. It is the refrain form the Lobster Quadrille poem and in this instance it poses the question whether you will survive by adopting new working practices to cope with the pandemic and its outcome.
