Open for Business.

I take the dog down to the beach for a walk every morning around 7am and pass several hairdressers on the way - the nearest a hundred yards or so. At that time there was a queue of about a dozen people and two already being lopped. A fitting metaphor for the country as we get down to single fingers in mortalities and a huge reduction in hospital admissions. Despite the fine weather, there is also a genuine hope that men’s hitherto sartorial elegance will re-emerge and the preponderance of baggy shorts will disappear.

The emergence from lockdown is all about getting into shape again and eradicating sloppy practices, and that applies to work, as well as home, as companies now have the experiences they need to evaluate WFH against a regulated office routine, and to calculate whether a four hour commute is a debilitating experience which could be reduced by staggering working times or re-siting offices outside the centre of London.

Have we also been Zoom’d, Team’d and Webinar’d out? Do we still have the enthusiasm to sit through yet another Team meeting, and do they really allow colleagues to share ideas, work through issues and produce a good days work? As a means of sharing information they appear to have replaced the standard press release, and all conferences are now on-line - a huge benefit which means you can revisit anything that you missed the first time round. On a smaller scale, the judging for the Vectorworks Student Design competition was held on Zoom - a very rewarding experience which allowed us to debate the entries and come up with a jointly favourable winner - which allowed us to evaluate the opinions and views of each member of the judging panel.
