The Green Deal

The built environment in Europe accounts for 40% of energy consumption and one third of CO2 emissions. A third of the building stock is over 50 years old and 75% energy inefficient - according to Frost & Sullivan's survey of 600 business leaders for their National Infrastructure Survey. The research findings complement the lead article in our March issue on the drive towards Net Zero Carbon by Rachel Skinner, president of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and highlight some of the response of the construction industry.

An interesting sub-text to the report is the higher adoption of sustainable practices in the Nordics, compared to the middle European countries, including the UK. Customer response and expectations figured highly in the benefits of most country agendas, (with many respondees saying that it is an important competitive advantage) followed by better use of resources, less waste and reduced energy consumption. The UK led in only one area - the influence of Investors on their commitment to change, whilst countries further South were absent from their headline figures (an interesting topic for further hypotheses?)

Now that we are emerging in the UK from the ravages and constraints of the pandemic and Brexit is entering the expected period of squabbling about individual industries, cases and rules and regulations, we are free to take up the reins on the much bigger challenges ahead on climate change, CO2 emissions and resource management. We have tested our ability to be resourceful and to accelerate our inventiveness to the full during the last 18 months, and we now need to use the skills we have learned for the good of the planet.
