Last year's Hammers Awards marked a significant departure from earlier events, being entertained by two opera singers from Covent Garden - a delightful innovation which I hope we continue, and one which crowned a successful return to the live event after a couple of years of the virtual stuff. With nominations now open, it is incumbent on all of you to send in your projects or post your votes. The list of nominations and topics are available on-line on constructioncomputingawards.co.uk and the deadline for sending in nominations is 7th September, with voting opening a week after. Time flies, so do it now.

Otherwise, this newsletter features a couple of articles focusing on just two of the issues exercising the industry - the use of Artificial Intelligence in construction and the global management of water. ALICE Technologies uses AI to handle the hugely complex range of factors that affect the performance and management of a major project. Their software has been developed to analyse a range of options for the major steps involved in a project, and to present the results of their analysis to Project Managers, facilitating more informed decisions.

The H2Porto case study looks at the development of the Urban Water Supply in Portugal's major port, using Digital Twins to balance the water supply against the demands of the City. It's a nicely contained solution, until one considers the fine summers we are having that have been hiding catastrophic drought conditions in much of the Northern Hemisphere, blamed chiefly on global warming. You can add the global water supply to Zero Carbon and global warming as the third Horseman of the Apocalypse. What will constitute the Fourth?

Finally - I love the design of the Birmingham Mosque in the Graphisoft Case Study, which finally brings the Mediaeval architecture of such buildings into the 21st Century.
