Welcome to the May 2015 Newsletter.

According to a recent report from the digital skills committee of the House of Lords, digital technology is changing our lives, work, society and politics, but the UK risks being left behind in this era unless its digital skills are improved. Steve Harrison of Exponential-e argues in an opinion piece in this edition of our e-newsletter that Cloud may act as an enabler for UK business - serving to 'level the playing field' and allow firms to compete realistically against far larger competitors. Harrison says: "By combining dedicated hardware with the burstable capacity and enhanced functionality of the Cloud then businesses can scale resources on-demand to meet business requirements and achieve greater flexibility."

While large businesses often have the slack in their budgets and enough resources to ensure that a well skilled IT team can be staffed and maintained, smaller enterprises often don't have this capacity available. So 'going outside' to a Cloud service provider may well be the answer: offering access to the computing power that will allow them to compete. It's an interesting argument, and we'd love to know whether our readers agree: feel free to send me your thoughts at the email address below.
