Welcome to the October 2015 Newsletter.

As this issue of our e-Newsletter goes out the Cloud Hosting team has just returned from two exhausting days at IP Expo Europe. This year the organisers boasted of the event comprising ‘six events under one roof’. But is this really a good thing? Visitors had the choice of attending any or all of Data Analytics Europe, DevOps Europe and Unified Communications Europe, newly added to the Data Centre, Cyber Security and Cloud and Infrastructure sections already established. With over 300 exhibitors spread across the show floor, there is perhaps a danger that visitors simply cannot get round all the stands that might be of interest to them – and that is without even beginning to consider the vast selection of seminars, presentations and speeches (again over 300 at last count).

If delegates start to feel that they ‘can’t see the wood for the trees’ at an event like this, there is a real possibility that they will decide it simply isn’t worth the effort. For most delegates it has become essential to pre-plan attendance: who are the real ‘must-sees’? Where are the firms situated and how much time will it take to get between them? What time-slots will have to be booked out for the all-important keynotes or industry round tables? There is no question that IP Expo and shows like it fulfil a vital role for the IT industry and for users – but are we at risk of losing sight of why delegates attend in the first place? Is bigger necessarily always better? I’d love to hear your views, as ever.
