Nerds Rule OK
Whilst Bentleys Assetwise APM case study for Exelon truly satisfied my nerdish tendencies, I trust you will perservere with the article, as it provides a compelling logical rationale that can be used to quantify and forecast costs associated with asset maintenance – and to optimise the same by calculating the wear rate and lifetime expectancies of all types of equipment and replacing them before they wear out or fail.
I am hardly a nerd in the geekish sense – I am more of a technophobe when it comes to the innards and operating systems of computers – but I can get pretty pedantic when it comes to acquiring the right sort of information when decisions have to be made – and this falls neatly into my lap. The trick lies in deciding which type of information is required – whether accumulated from equipment mounted sensors, historical records or whatever, and then devising the algorithms that use that data to extrapolate how it will change over period of time, and to set points where further maintenance becomes prohibitive, or the lack of it will cause it to fail.
It’s a bit like AI – the learning process is ongoing, and feeds upon itself. The more data you get, the more accurate the results will become. Don’t you just love it when a plan comes together?
