COBie or Not COBie That is the question.
Bill East of Prairie Sky Consulting came up with the COBie format for classifying and formalising building information at the start of the BIM process some 7-10 years ago. Computer technology has moved along rapidly since then, and with it people's familiarity with digital technology. Users at all ages are happy to explore complex 3D worlds in gaming and virtual reality scenarios. How will the next ten years pan out? Should we leverage the power of the new technologies, or should we stick with a tried and tested format?
As a means of accumulating building information for asset management, both COBie and the Federated Building Model, which combines building information from all disciplines in a single model, have serious pros and cons that need addressing. As companies embrace BIM they need to decide on the most efficient of these solutions, a decision that will become more critical as, having adopted BIM Level 2, we aim for BIM Level 3.
In association with Vectorworks, we are hosting a seminar on the 16th of May at the London Transport Museum in London's Covent Garden, looking at Information modelling and the benefits of both COBie and the Federated Model - and the views of a Facilities Manager, the user of that information - followed by a Q and A where attendees can put the most searching of questions to the panel of experts.
