The year 2020 will go down for more than Brexit and Covid19 - it will be the year when all of our traditional ways of working were turned on their heads. How many people are now working from home from choice, and resisting all attempts to get them to return to the office. Systems and processes have been adapted in many offices to cater for distributed work forces, with variations on the theme - such as mixed office/home work schedules, a greater reliance on social media like Teams and Zoom to host business meetings, and shared desks in vastly underpopulated (yet still fiendishly expensive) offices in the city.
The annual get togethers have had to adapt, and are now run using social media, on line videos of conference sessions, highly focused tutorials and all the bells and whistles that you can throw at people when you don't have to sit them down in a vast auditorium in some seductive global location. The biggest benefit of this is that the number of virtual attendees rises dramatically, with some 90,000 people attending Autodesk University to watch over 750 sessions covering every aspect of their software, and similar numbers logging in to Bentleys Year in Infrastructure.
No longer do attendees have to dig into their busy schedules to travel to the exotic locations they are held in, or pay for the flights and the conference itself, and should they not have time to attend the vast number of events available...well, they can up and log in at their leisure after the event. All of this from the comfort of their own office or sofa.
And next year? Will we go back to the old routine, or will we value the thing we have missed most this year - the ability to mingle with, and share experiences and tales with old and new colleagues - and if we are allowed, dig out the new flight schedules and start planning?
