Riding the Digital Tsunami
Information Management is just one of many challenges facing us, but is it the key to getting to grips with the rest of the challenges, both in construction and globally? Is a more precise knowledge of the amount of greenhouse gases we are pumping into the air or how much carbon-based energy we are consuming really going to make that much difference, when we already know in our gut that we have to make massive changes in our life-styles, how we get around and what we consume – and what we discard – to make any significant difference to our industry, and ultimately to the planet?
Riding the Digital Tsunami is an apt metaphor, though – it’s the theme of the article on the Challenges for Construction, which looks at the issues through the prism of the Access Groups ERP solutions. Like the tsunami you can either wait for it to overwhelm you, or you can take steps to get out of its way (though we are probably in too deep for that), or you can dig out your metaphorical surf-board and take advantage of the growth in data in a headlong dash to develop new efficiencies, better ways of working, leaner and more advanced technologies, and a smarter way of living.
The challenges are certainly there, but as the article points out, they are opportunities, too. It’s an exciting time to be in the industry, and we are privileged to be in a position where what we design, what we build, and how we shape our infrastructure is going to be pivotal for the future of the country. I didn’t start out in the construction industry, but if I was about to embark on my first career, I would be hot on the heels of the Coventry Uni’s student Scott Griffiths tails – in this issue’s news.
