Off-site fabrication and Net Zero Carbon

The Government appears to have lost sight of the ball at the moment – that is the race to Net Zero carbon emissions – with the new Prime Minister dithering about whether to attend the next round of COP27 due to take place in Egypt, and Greta Thunberg deciding not to attend and calling it out for people in power using it for “greenwashing, lying and cheating." It's still a hot topic in the construction industry, though, and in this issue we have two articles on net zero fabrication and construction.

Trimble base their article on Powerfab on the stark fact that 50% of the embodied carbon in a building project is specified at the design stage. In recent issues we have had a number of features on embodied carbon calculation software which allows the amount of embodied carbon to be assessed in every process from the original mining or manufacture of materials and components, including transport to the building site – and subsequently throughout the buildings projected life.

The message is re-inforced by Dan Allinson, CEO of Net Zero Buildings, who adds some further statistics and lucid arguments about the need to adopt a net zero mindset, but also to make low carbon buildings affordable and achievable for all.

As Dan says - 'it isn't enough to wait for the government to support the sector or to step back from our responsibility. It's about constantly challenging our carbon impact to ensure the spaces we’re creating are as sustainable as possible."
