Microsoft at the cloud tipping point

The SharePoint world is at a significant tipping point, argues John Mancini of AIIM: customers are moving into a hybrid world, with some organisations moving to the cloud, some sticking with on-premise and most opting for a hybrid solution

This edition of the Document Manager newsletter comes hot on the heels of the DM Awards 2013, which saw nearly 200 of the industry's leading lights come together under one roof to celebrate all that is innovative and interesting from the sector. Big winners included ibml who managed to take away product trophies for both high volume and desktop scanners, as well as Microsoft, Kodak, Canon, and CCube Solutions. For a full list of all the winners and runners-up, please visit the Awards website at www.dmawards.com - and if your DM/ECM product of choice wasn't there, make sure you get in early with your nominations next year!

This newsletter includes a fascinating viewpoint from AIIM's John Mancini, who suggests that SharePoint customers are at a 'tipping point': a hybrid world where a decision needs to be made on whether to go with a hosted, on-premise or 'bit-of-both' approach. As John says: “For small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), Office 365 can act as a one-stop shop from a provider they know and for the most part trust. For any business currently relying on file-sharing, email and spreadsheets to run their business - in other words for most SMEs - cloud based solutions and getting out of the e-mail hosting business can be a significant step forward. For larger enterprises the issues of governance in particular become more complex as they enter a hybrid world that will likely include on-premise, private and public cloud solutions and a host of variations and combinations.”

Clearly this dilemma doesn't apply solely to SharePoint implementations - we're likely to see similar discussions taking place across a raft of different applications and platforms over the next few years - I'd be fascinated to hear what you our readers think.
