Is your business wasting two months of every year because of inefficient document processes? It sounds absurd, but that is the finding of a recent IDC research study highlighted in our news pages in this issue of the Document Manager e-newsletter. The report suggests that the volume of data being received by businesses has increased six-fold over the last five years, and looks set to increase at a similar rate in the future – perhaps unsurprisingly to anyone involved in information management!
But what is surprising is the scale of the impact that this 'data tsunami' appears to be having on business efficiency. IDC would have us believe that document-related challenges are wasting employees' time to the tune of a 20% loss in productivity each year. The growth in cloud and mobile technologies, while offering a massive boon to end users, appears to be a contributing factor in this problem. As we've touched on before, users increasingly have an expectation of being able to access any of their data at any time, on any device. The challenge for IT providers is to provide a service that delivers on that high level of demand, while maintaining security and integrity of records across a business application. This, of course, is what DM and ECM providers have been specialising in for many years now - so perhaps this worry is actually more of an opportunity for the industry?
