Welcome to the May 2014 Newsletter.
It's a case of mind the gap this month - not just the IT skills gap but the apparent growing divide between the IT department and the boardroom. Research conducted by ManageEngine at the Service Desk and IT Support Show found that 40% of the IT professionals questioned described the current capacity of their department to do their job as stretched or over-stretched, with budget constraints, resourcing constraints and limitations on team skills cited as the main causes. The picture painted is of an IT department that wants to invest in infrastructure for the long-term, and a boardroom that wants to see immediate results for end users. Sound familiar?
Elsewhere this week, new research from City Lifeline has found that "Almost a third (28 per cent) of UK senior IT personnel believe IT equipment has become more complex than five years ago; a huge contributor to today's IT skills gap." Commenting, Roger Keenan, MD of City Lifeline said, "To expand and flourish, organisations need to increase their work force. However, with the current skills gap, any growth plans that businesses have will be halted. ...We must look to invest more in training. It is no secret that technology changes by the day and so we must nurture talent to keep up with this constant progression. If we fail to invest in education and training, UK businesses will cease to develop and in turn, their customers will suffer."
For Mark Keepaxof of ASG Solutions it comes down to a question of "what services are the most valuable and what exactly is the role of IT in the new age of workplace computing?" With demand for Software as a Service and Cloud solutions only set to grow, should we be thinking about IT as a Service too? According to Mark it's now the perfect time for IT to “return to its roots and emerge as a true innovator." Read his thought-provoking article in this issue for more.
