Welcome to the January 2015 Newsletter.
So how has your January gone so far? Dropped any massive, very public bombshells about the future of encryption in the UK, for example? As sound bites go David Cameron’s call for a ban on encryption last week was a classic example of biting off more than you can chew, and the IT industry in particular will be digesting the ramifications of it long after our January dieting fads are but a distant memory. “In our country, do we want to allow a means of communication between people which we cannot read?” asked the PM. Well as it turns out yes, most of us do thanks!
So how were Cameron's remarks received last week? A quick glance at social media tells the tale. “If Cameron is proposing an end to encryption in the UK, then any information sent across the internet would be open for any company, government, or script kiddie with 10 minutes “hacking” experience to access,” according to an article in the Guardian "Encryption is mathematics, not technology. It can't be suppressed by law," said Matthew Bloch, MD of Bytemark to the BBC.Or how about Cory Doctorow, writing for boingboing.net:“David Cameron doesn't understand technology very well, so he doesn't actually know what he's asking for.”Ouch.
As Alex Plaskett, Head of Mobile at MWR InfoSecurity says in this issue of the Newsletter, “Heavy handed or simply ill-thought through regulation has the potential to undermine the legitimate uses of (encryption) for both businesses and consumers alike.”
It was only back in November that deputy national security adviser Hugh Powell was photographed (albeit by a zoom lens) carrying a distinctly unprotected official memo on the Ukraine crises outside No 10. Perhaps Government officials should concentrate on securing their own communications first before dictating to the rest of us? Either way it’s safe to say that we’ll be hearing a lot more on the subject of encryption in the coming months.
