Welcome to the June 2017 Newsletter.
We’re returning to the theme of digital transformation this month and indeed in the next issue of Network Computing magazine. Two of the articles featured here, from Simon Ratcliffe, Principal Consultant at Ensono, and Nigel Kersten, Chief Technical Strategist at Puppet respectively, emphasise that a successful digital transformation project will rely on a corresponding change in culture within an organisation. As Simon points out, “Successful digitally aware organisations recognise that it is their people who drive change. Anyone from marketing, customer service or IT can see an opportunity for transformation.”
Nigel’s article meanwhile makes the case for embracing DevOps practices as part of a successful digital transformation strategy, emphasising that “Digital transformation isn't over when you complete your project. Consider creating a system that will continue to respond to change and adapt it accordingly. To get there, you need to create a culture that encourages and rewards constant experimentation and learns from results.”
Elsewhere this month we have several security-themed articles that are particularly pertinent in the wake of last month’s WannaCry attack on the NHS. Mathivanan V, Director of Product Management at ManageEngine, argues for the automation of patch management while Dave Palmer, Director of Technology at Darktrace explains how an “immune system approach” based on machine learning and probabilistic mathematics could deliver a real-time response to a ransomware infection.
Finally Bill Champness, MD at Hardware Associates argues that investing in a secure, high quality IT infrastructure needn’t rely on maxing out your budget, pointing out that “Aneurin Bevan University Health Board recently upgraded their IT systems with refurbished hardware, saving over £160,000 in the process. Interestingly, you’ll see that NHS Wales was not hit by the latest high profile cyber-attack.”
