Welcome to the August 2017 Newsletter.

We’re putting the emphasis on the D in GDPR this month with several articles focusing on the role of data. The demands on our data are set to soar with the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation next year, a fact compounded by the data explosion that organisations are already experiencing. As Robin Webster, Director of Technology and Services at Centiq points out in his article on managing in-memory databases, “In 2013, IDC predicted that the world would generate 44 zettabytes of data annually. However, once the rate that the world is developing and utilising connected devices is factored in, analysts now believe that we could see approximately 180 zettabytes of data created annually by 2025.”

Vast data volumes such as these are hard to comprehend, let alone manage effectively and in accordance with legislation such as the EU GDPR. To this end we also have an article this month by Frank Krieger, Director of Compliance at iland on the role of the Data Protection Officer. How many of us really understand the responsibilities of a DPO? Read Frank’s article for some timely guidance.

So how can we utilise these increasingly large data streams to actionable and immediate effect? As Mark Boggia, Director Sales Engineering Europe at Nexthink observes, “Enterprise complexity and demand for the adoption of IoT devices is increasing, while end-users expect seamless functionality regardless of the platform or technology they adopt.” Read Mark’s article this issue for some thought-provoking insights on leveraging discovery at the speed of data.
