With the recent release of the UK Government’s updated Cyber Security Strategy: 2022 to 2030 now seems like the perfect time to look at the role risk assessment can play in navigating and nullifying security threats to your business.

So where should you start when implementing a risk assessment? According to UK-based IT managed services company TSG, “The first step is to identify the overarching themes of the cybersecurity risks your business faces. We recommend doing this by listing the areas of your business that pose a risk. The main areas include software risks, hardware risks, data risks, vendor risks and personnel risks. There is some crossover between these categories, but it’s important to understand how they can each pose a risk to your business.” Read TSG’s article in this issue for more.

For Matthew Margetts, Director of Sales and Marketing at Smarter Technologies, risk assessment is an essential and ongoing process for any smart office: “In an ever-evolving cybersecurity threat landscape, security is not a one-time action. Conducting a holistic risk assessment allows for current and future-forward risk mitigation. A good risk assessment includes up-front technical measures along with ongoing practices that enable organisations to evaluate their cybersecurity risks and establish actions and policies that minimise threats over time.”

In his article Matthew explains why zero trust is a must and outlines how Smarter Technologies implemented a risk mitigation strategy for the UK regulatory body, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) as they prepared to migrate their business to a cloud-based platform. It may well be a risk assessment that we must all be willing to take.
