About this Whitepaper
Quarterly market share reports usually make
for dry reading, but Gartner Inc.’s recent application
delivery controller market share report was something of
an exception. Buried among its many facts and figures was
evidence of an intriguing phenomenon: While other leading
ADCs experienced declining or flat market share, Citrix
NetScaler gained share consistently for six consecutive quarters
from Q1 ’12 thru the most recent report in Q2 ’13.
The contrast between the quarter-over-quarter performance
of NetScaler and that of products from longtime market leader F5 Networks Inc., of Seattle, was particularly
striking. While NetScaler gained 9 percent of market
share between the first and second quarters of 2012, then
advanced 18 percent and 8 percent in the next two quarters,
F5’s market share grew an anemic 1 percent between Q1 and
Q2, and actually declined 7 percent and 4 percent, respectively,
on a quarter-over-quarter basis in the following two
reporting periods. In the first two quarters of 2013, the results
are just as dramatic, with year-on-year growth for NetScaler
showing massive product sale gains.
