Comment

The New Year has arrived with no change to the underlying narrative, and a precious few months before we ceremoniously, or unceremoniously, leave the EU. Matt, the cartoonist who keeps the Daily Telegraph afloat, has it spot on. Picture the commons dining room with two MPs telling the waiter precisely what they don't want - definitely not the fish! - and no idea or mention of what they would like.

Everybody is resigned or delighted that we will be coming out - and is heartily sick of the subject - but nobody appears to be able to put forward an achievable aim, except to proclaim that we both ‘want our cake and to eat it!'.

The construction industry is not immune to the problem. On one hand, the global reach of UK construction companies has seen many International joint ventures emerge to tackle major infrastructure projects - such as the one on HS2 - which I am sure are not in jeopardy. On the other hand, I am currently researching for the next issue, but the strength of the UK industry has been bolstered by an influx of highly talented professionals from Europe and elsewhere. I hope that this will remain so.
